The 3rd International “White Nights” Legal Forum was held with the support of Kachkin & Partners

The Forum was organized by LegalStudies.RU, supported by LEGAL STRATAGENCY. Kachkin & Partners, Capital Legal Services, and Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg supported the event as Forum Partners. Taleon Imperial Hotel became the event venue again. Over 100 experts from 12 countries attended the Forum to discuss legal regulation trends and share know-how of efficient law firm management.

This year the Forum’s program demonstrated interest in European law: the expert spoke about protection of business interests in the European Court of Human Rights, wealth management in the European offshore zones, discussed why was English law so popular among Russian businessmen, and also analyzed the ways of interaction between domestic and international lawyers under international dispute resolution. Experts from Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, the USA, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania discussed the future of Russian lawyers in other jurisdictions, disputed if one should gullibly adopt English Law provisions, if it was difficult to work with Russian partners and clients, and they shared some of their professional arts (skills).

Steven Galbraith, the Partner of Slaughter & May, gave the Key-note speech. He declared that firm division into international and domestic was outdated, and nowadays any law firm had to respond to the similar global challenges. Up to him, the best way of defense is to cooperate, for instance, in a Best Friend network.

The participants discussed the acute issue of PPP development in the session chaired by Denis Kachkin and Oleg Lyskov of the Committee for Investment and Strategic projects in St. Petersburg. When drafting a federal law on PPP, one should be guided by the principle “do no harm to already launched regional projects”, — concluded the experts.

Preservation and adjustment of historic buildings and sites to the modern use is a burning issue not only for St. Petersburg. “The most important thing is to consider everyone’s interest”, — noted Dmitry Nekrestyanov, moderator, Partner at Kachkin & Partners. Tomas Milasauskas, Partner at LAWIN Law firm, called for patience – it took Lithuania almost 20 years to improve efficient dialogue between society and business.

Julia Zagonek from White & Case, Rupert D’Cruz from the British-Russian Law Association, Kirill Saskov, Partner at Kachkin & Partners, Anna Grishchenkova from FBK, Irina Onikienko, Partner at Capital Legal Services, Louis Flannery, Partner at Stephenson Harwood and Henrik Fiber, Partner at Rochier and Arbitrator at Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce presented a case study session ‘Managing domestic legal risks by international disputes resolution’.

“We appreciate the attention that our Western colleagues devote to the Russian and particularly to St. Petersburg’s market – that proves the Russian business competitiveness in the world economy. Being a long-standing partner and co-organizer of the White Nights Legal Forum, we find important that the event has become a platform for discussion, practical experience exchange, business contacts establishment”, — noted Denis Kachkin, Co-chairman of Forum’s Organizing Committee, Managing Partner at Kachkin & Partners.
